What's New in TOEFL?
- Shorter Test Duration & Fewer Questions: Total test time has been reduced to under 2 hours, down from around 3 hours. For example, Reading now covers 2 passages in 35 minutes, instead of 3–4 over ~60 minutes.
- Adaptive Testing (From Jan 2026): Reading and Listening sections are now multistage adaptive. Your performance in the first stage determines the difficulty of subsequent questions.
- Writing & Speaking Task Updates: Writing now includes an “Academic Discussion” task, replacing the independent essay. Speaking may feature a virtual interview with short follow‑up questions alongside existing tasks.
- New Scoring Scale Aligned with CEFR: In addition to the usual 0–120, scores will now present a 1–6 band linked to the CEFR framework.
- Faster, More Accessible Experience: Home Edition improvements (May 2025) include AI identity checks, in‑house proctors, and a smoother interface. Expect scores within 72 hours and entrance into test centers with updated audio systems.
